Course overview

The aim of the training at this level is to equip the trainee officer with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch and to use radar, ARPA and other electronic aids to maintain safety of navigation.

Mandatory for candidates for certificates of competency as officer in charge of a navigational watch in accordance with regulation II/1 of the STCW Convention navigation.

Principles of operation: electronic navigational position fixing and information systems
Principles of operation: Loran C Navigation System
Principles of operation of satellite positioning systems
Principles of operation: Electronic Chart Display Information System
Principles of operation: electronic log and the marine echo sounder
Principles of operation: marine radar and ARPA equipment
Principles of operation: Automatic Identification Systems
Principles of operation and ability to apply effective bridge watchkeeping and teamwork procedures
